Descendants Of Pioneer Escondido Family My name is Ron Hall. I have lived in Escondido since 1978 and when I retired from work I became interest in The San Dieguito River Park and became a volunteer in 1996. In 2003, the River Park refurbished The "Sikes Adobe Farmhouse" that was built by the Zenas Sikes family in 1870 in Southwest Escondido (near Westgate Mall) I became a docent for the Farmhouse and also wrote a book on the family – "The Ancestors & Descendants of Zenas Sikes." My story is about two of the descendants of Zenas and Eliza Sikes. Augustus K Cravath (1851-1935) was the son-in-law of Zenas and Eliza Sikes. Augustus came to California in the 1870's from the state of Iowa with his sister and brother-in-law, Charles Wattson and bought a farm in the Poway Valley. In December 1877, he married Kate Sikes, the fourth child of Zenas & Eliza and the newly weds settled in Poway. The family moved to Escondido in the 1880's. AK was on the Board of Directors of the Escondido bank on the corner of grand and Broadway (now the Jim Crone building) and was the first Mayor of Escondio in 1888. Cravath became the Asst. Mgr. of Escondido Land and Town Co, which operated San Diego Capital, the company that founded Escondido. He remained in that capacity for eight years and may be said to be the "father of Escondido." After a nice tennis game in the morning the fog was finally starting to burn off. I had to decided to go on a little excursion up the California coastline and set off on the road by 10 am. From Solana Beach I drove north on historic Highway 101 through the coastal communities of Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside. I made a stop in Oceanside, one of the largest cities in San Diego County. Oceanside has an attractive harbour area that features a variety of restaurants and retail stores. It is also known for the Oceanside Pier, the longest wooden pier on the western coastline of the United States. Now the sky had cleared up completely, and I started to head further north. I took Highway 5 since the coastal area is inaccessible as it is the location of Camp Pendleton, the busiest military base in the United States. Large tracts of land are used as training grounds for the United States Marine Corps as well as all other branches of the US military. A good half hour further north of Camp Pendleton, Highway 5, a very busy eight- or ten-lane highway, started to curve inland. I had now left San Diego County and entered Orange County, the second most populous county in California just south of Los Angeles that is mostly made up of suburban communities. Many high-tech firms are located in Orange County, and many of the communities are very affluent.
