North Sacramento Homes For Sale

Old Sacramento is a 28 acre National Historic Landmark District and California State Historic Park situated along the banks of the beautiful Sacramento River.  This area is rich in history that dates back to the Gold Rush and of the Old Transcontinental Railroad.  When  John Sutter arrived here in 1839 along with his landing party, at the point of where the American River and the Sacramento River join, the settlement of  Sutters Fort was established.  Slowly the population grew as the area attracted more and more people.  The Gold Rush of 1848 was actually the beginning of the City of Sacramento.  Due to its location on the Sacramento River, the little settlement grew into a major trading center for the influx of miners and others flocking to the area.  With its great access to the navigable rivers, and the ability to attract large ships and boats to move supplies, the City set a quick pace for commerce and trade.  The combination of its location, innovative businessmen and merchants, the activities taking place inland with the Gold Rush, and the commercial values of the rivers all  allowed profitable opportunities for both residents and newcomers to the area.  Sacramento quickly became a destination as well as an embarkation point for thousands of immigrants eager to take their share of the fortunes being made in the near by hills and caused Sacramento to become the 2nd largest city in California, next to San Francisco.  The rivers were hosting all types of ships, including steamers and boat type store-ships. By 1850, the city had over 10,000 residents, however, few women or children lived here. Only about 7% of the residents were women.

In the beginning, and during the early growth years, the area experienced many floods and fires causing the city fathers to offer different types of solutions to the ongoing problems.  Over the years many different plans were developed, some implemented, to save the area from the continuing floods and fires that ravaged the fast growing settlement.  Eventually, the city planners came up with a plan to build up the street levels way above the natural ground level of the original settlement.  The ground level of the city was raised by bringing in tons and tons of dirt by wagons, to build up the ground surface level to a higher level above the natural river levels.

In the 1960s, the area became the focus of a major redevelopment program and the first historic district was created.  Today Old Sacramento has more than 53 commercial building that are classified as historic buildings, more than any other area of the Western U.S.  The buildings are still mostly owned by private interests with many thriving businesses, shops, and offices located within.  The area is a wonderful and historic place to visit and tour while visiting Sacramento or just passing through.  Travel through time with the streets still cobblestoned and dirt like they were during the Gold Rush days.  The buildings are historic sites and restored to their original condition.
The homes in this historic district are diverse, mostly single family type and older. The homes will range in size, age and price, from the affordable lower end for smaller 1 & 2 bedroom, to larger 3 bedroom homes.   There are many homes on the market in the smaller to medium sized ranges.  There are also other types of housing options here in the area, including condos, townhomes, and some mobile homes in nice secluded parks.
Business booms today with visitors coming from the U.S. and from all over the world. There are many landmarks, museums, theatres, tours, and regularly scheduled city events that take place during the summer months.  The district has 100s of wonderful specialty shops, restaurants and antique shops, many housed in the old original wood buildings that are now Historic Monuments. The shopping options are amazing with specialty shops that feature goods of every price and style.  From the very beginning when the women began to come into the area, they dominated as dressmakers, and clothing store owners.  Since all of the clothing was custom made, these women did a lively business and today many of those same types of businesses are alive and well in Old Sacramento
