Placerville has a long and rich history that began with the gold rush in the 1840s.  Thousands of fortune seekers came to Northern California after the news of the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill, just 10 miles away in Coloma.
Placerville became a center for the surrounding mining camps for their needed supplies.  Originally Placerville was called “Hangtown”.  Since the beginning there have been many famous businessmen that have conducted business in Placerville.  Phillip Armour who was a meat packer, John Studebaker, the auto maker and other well know entrepreneurs have done business in this community.
