The history of West Sacramento is rich and dates back through the centuries to when the lifestyle of the Patwin Indians lived in the area; hunting and fishing and taking advantage of the abundant natural resources. This all changed with the introduction of European settlers to the Sacramento Valley during the 19th century. It brought hunters and trappers by the abundance of fur bearing animals. Unfortunately, it also brought many diseases to the area which eventually wiped out the Patwins with malaria and smallpox epidemics and other sickness. Over time, more and more settlers came into the Valley and the few Patwin Indians that were left had to work for the European Americans, doing different types of jobs, and resulted in the cessation of the Patwin Indian culture, many valued traditions, and eventually their lifestyle. Around 1844 and 1845, the first of the permanent residents settled in and built permanent buildings in the area where the Sacramento and American Rivers come together. This was the beginning of what we know today as West Sacramento, California. One of these 2 original residents acquired a land grant from the Mexican Governor for a small area of land. A salmon fishery was established along the river for the pickling and drying of the salmon, also raised livestock and began to grow different types of vegetables and melons. Shortly after, the gold rush began in California and everything after that would change forever. That discovery brought thousands of miners to the area, most which planned to go back to wherever they had come from, however many of those miners decided to stay in the area causing the population to explode during the following years. In 1849 the first land area was subdivided into forty one blocks and the Town of Washington was created. Soon many types of businesses came flocking to the area, drawn by the Sacramento River close by and everything and possibility that the river could eventually offer the businesses.
Soon hotels, saloons, restaurants catering to the needs of the miners and weary travelers who making the harsh journey through the marshlands on their way north. As time passed, the area continued to boom economically and grew into several small communities; Bryle, Broderick and West Sacramento. The former little Town of Washington was changed to Broderick. The area was called ‘East Yolo’. This area eventually became the beginnings of the City of West Sacramento. The City continues to change and grow and prosper today. With roots that are deep, the residents of West Sacramento look forward to the future with the same positive spirit and work ethics that the original pioneers brought to the area. The pride of ownership of the town and history is alive and strong.
